RULES TO LIVE BY………………………………

(Sent to us from or friends in the mountains of PA)

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense.
The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.
The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. As John Steinbeck once said: Don't pick a fight with an old man.
If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics will get you killed.

3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter
recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him; "Why do you carry a .45?"
The Ranger responded, "Because they don't make a .46."

6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady
commented on his wearing his sidearm. "Sheriff, I see you have your pistol.
Are you expecting trouble?" "No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would
have brought my rifle."

8. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

9. The primary purpose of a side arm is to protect you until you can get to a rifle or shotgun.

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did.
She said "Well, I certainly hope it isn't loaded!" To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!"
She then asked, "Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?"
My reply was, "No, not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire
extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too."

Military Rules for Gun fighting

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns.

2. The double tap rule: Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.
Ammo is cheap. Your life is expensive.

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough nor using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more
dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

9.5 Use a gun that works EVERY TIME.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but he should have to
beat you to death with it, because it is empty.

11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. ("In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.")

19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

23. Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to
avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with a ".4"

Reaction to Popes speech - September 2006

Pete Phillips

OK, now the muslims (small m intentionally) have another excuse to take time off from productive work – the Popes speech.

Those ignorant, uninformed, led by the noses folks masquerading as religious groups  were told to demonstrate, burn the Pope in effigy  and hold up printed signs in English so the liberal media would have something to put on the six o’clock news.

Another response to the speech was to burn churches and murder a nun..so far. What a way to debate an academic topic.

Now, what did Pope Benedict do that so outraged these idiots. Nothing is the proper answer. If it was such an atrocious bit of verbiage  one must ask … why did it take so long for the demonstrations to begin? Those in the muslim community that are in charge of finding excuses to complain about the western civilizations were slow AND then they had to tell the ignorant masses it was a bad thing.. they (the masses) still do not know why. Hey, its another day off.

Here’s what happened, Benedict gave a speech. A speech in an academic setting. He quoted the words of a fourteenth century Byzantine emperor. How much more boring can that get?  Apparently this Byzantine guy said something we all came to find out is true… they probably had it right in 1300 but just did not fix the problem. From what I can gleam from the news reports the Pope s speech, in context, did NOT use this to demean, slander, insult or to otherwise provoke anyone or any group.

At this point we ask – What did the Pope do wrong?

Answer…. He apologized more than once. No need to apologize for proper conduct. Hey Pope, stop apologizing and just go back to work BUT double up on the Swiss guards. Remember the religion of the guy that shot your predecessor and he didn’t give that speech. They don’t need a reason to demonstrate or shoot…just an excuse..

Here in the good old USA we have priests who claim the war is immoral .. on our part. Didn’t hear that word used when the Towers went down. They say the Popes recent problems are his doing. They say we are only interested in oil, as they drive their Porches and fly around the world and vacation in the Keys. You see they do not use oil..right. These are guys we used to look up to as children. That was in the era of the Greatest Generation. They have now deteriorated to emulate spoiled children who believe the fairy tales told them by their leftist press buddy’s. Yes, they have become the Communist’s the Greatest Generation warned us about.

If the Pope wonders why there is a shortage of priests in the USA he needs to stop apologizing to the muslims, stop dumbing down the Bishopry and clean out the homosexuals from the seminaries and priesthood. He might also consider educating these guys in what the real world is all about..

How to fight the war on terror is not debatable only the methods and tactics. No need for apology’s – remember 9-11.

Israel attack Sunday - July 30, 2006

The news & Sunday sermons are filled with comments & pictures about innocent children being killed...BUT who is responsible .... Hezbola themselves....Why? because they knew they were there, prevented them from leaving, fired their missils at Israel, left and waited for the response....THEN they got the press THEY planned  to get.

KERRY ENDORSED BY COMMUNIST PARTY

Online -  let me know what you think ??   its from a very  excellent source !... WOW...

GUESS WHO'S ENDORSING JOHN KERRY????

The Communist Party of The United States of America, CPUSA, is publicly supporting the election of John Kerry No, this is not a typo...you read it correctly. The CPUSA has made available on its Website,  http://www.cpusa.org/, an advertisement entitled Top Ten Reasons To Defeat Bush. This advertisement can be downloaded. The communist party urges readers to place this ad in local newspapers throughout the country to defeat President Bush.

Remarkably, the "Top Ten Reasons" of the Communist party are identical to those of the Democratic party; out-sourcing, homosexual rights, abortion and the like.

At first, it was thought that "this was only a coincidence." The Democratic party of the United States couldn't be in lock step with the Marxists! So, the originator of this email wrote to a spokesman of the CPUSA in Georgia and here is part of the spokesman's letter: "The CPUSA supports the John Kerry campaign with donations and volunteer effort. We believe that defeating George Bush is the single most important issue this November"

**Next, it was discovered that one of Kerry's campaign themes is "Let America be America Again." This slogan was borrowed from a Communist poet, Langston Hughes. This is not common knowledge to the average American. "Let America be America Again" sounds good but is a rambling, gloomy poem.
Interestingly, another poem by Langston goes as follows; "Goodbye, Christ Jesus, Lord, God, Jehovah, Beat it on away from here now. Make way for a new guy with no religion at all -- A real guy named Marx, communist, Lenin, Peasant, Stalin, Worker, ME -- I said, ME!"

Then, if this was not convincing enough that the Democratic party has lost it, a third discovery!

**A Vietnam vet group took a trip to Communist Hanoi to investigate a report that John Kerry was in the "Hanoi Hall of Fame.." Yes, there is a museum in Hanoi with a section dedicated to foreign activists who help defeat the United States Military in Vietnam. Of course, you would expect Jane Fonda's picture to be there. But, alas, there is John Kerry's picture shaking the hand of a communist official.

Never has there been such a tragedy! Never has there been such a threat to America! Has the Democratic party has been taken over by the far, far left?  It's not only the communists but the homosexual activists who are appalled that George Bush is married to a woman! They are enraged that the President wants a constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage between a
man and woman.

Then we have the ACLU running to a federal activist judge with every piece of legislation that doesn't fit into their leftist agenda. They support every Democratic socialist whim. The removal of the Ten  Commandments is their top priority!

Don't trust this message for the truth -- visit the CPUSA website at: http://www.cpusa.org/ read the articles, and then decide for yourself. So. who will you vote for during the next Presidential Election?

Bring it on, John

"Of course, the president keeps telling people he would never question my service to our country. Instead, he watches as a Republican-funded attack group does just that. Well, if he wants to have a debate about our service in Vietnam, here is my answer: 'Bring it on.'" -- Sen. John Kerry

Dear John,

As usual, you have it wrong. You don't have a beef with President George Bush about your war record. He's been exceedingly generous about your military service. Your complaint is with the 2.5 million of us who served honorably in a war that ended 29 years ago and which you, not the president, made the centerpiece of this campaign.

I talk to a lot of vets, John, and this really isn't about your medals or how you got them. Like you, I have a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. I only have two Purple Hearts, though. I turned down the others so that I could stay with the Marines in my rifle platoon. But I think you might agree with me, though I've never heard you say it, that the officers always got more medals than they earned and the youngsters we led never got as many medals as they deserved.

This really isn't about how early you came home from that war, either, John. There have always been guys in every war who want to go home. There are also lots of guys, like those in my rifle platoon in Vietnam, who did a full 13 months in the field. And there are, thankfully, lots of young Americans today in Iraq and Afghanistan who volunteered to return to war because, as one of them told me in Ramadi a few weeks ago, "the job isn't finished."

Nor is this about whether you were in Cambodia on Christmas Eve, 1968. Heck John, people get lost going on vacation. If you got lost, just say so. Your campaign has admitted that you now know that you really weren't in Cambodia that night and that Richard Nixon wasn't really president when you thought he was. Now would be a good time to explain to us how you could have all that bogus stuff "seared" into your memory -- especially since you want to have your finger on our nation's nuclear trigger.

But that's not really the problem, either. The trouble you're having, John, isn't about your medals or coming home early or getting lost -- or even Richard Nixon. The issue is what you did to us when you came home, John.

When you got home, you co-founded Vietnam Veterans Against the War and wrote "The New Soldier," which denounced those of us who served -- and were still serving -- on the battlefields of a thankless war. Worst of all, John, you then accused me -- and all of us who served in Vietnam -- of committing terrible crimes and atrocities.

On April 22, 1971, under oath, you told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that you had knowledge that American troops "had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the country side of South Vietnam." And you admitted on television that "yes, yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed."

And for good measure you stated, "(America is) more guilty than any other body, of violations of (the) Geneva Conventions ... the torture of prisoners, the killing of prisoners."

Your "antiwar" statements and activities were painful for those of us carrying the scars of Vietnam and trying to move on with our lives. And for those who were still there, it was even more hurtful. But those who suffered the most from what you said and did were the hundreds of American prisoners of war being held by Hanoi. Here's what some of them endured because of you, John:

Capt. James Warner had already spent four years in Vietnamese custody when he was handed a copy of your testimony by his captors. Warner says that for his captors, your statements "were proof I deserved to be punished." He wasn't released until March 14, 1973.

Maj. Kenneth Cordier, an Air Force pilot who was in Vietnamese custody for 2,284 days, says his captors "repeated incessantly" your one-liner about being "the last man to die" for a lost cause. Cordier was released March 4, 1973.

Navy Lt. Paul Galanti says your accusations "were as demoralizing as solitary (confinement) ... and a prime reason the war dragged on." He remained in North Vietnamese hands until February 12, 1973.

John, did you think they would forget? When Tim Russert asked about your claim that you and others in Vietnam committed "atrocities," instead of standing by your sworn testimony, you confessed that your words "were a bit over the top." Does that mean you lied under oath? Or does it mean you are a war criminal? You can't have this one both ways, John. Either way, you're not fit to be a prison guard at Abu Ghraib, much less commander in chief.

One last thing, John. In 1988, Jane Fonda said: "I would like to say something ... to men who were in Vietnam, who I hurt, or whose pain I caused to deepen because of things that I said or did. I was trying to help end the killing and the war, but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I'm ... very sorry that I hurt them. And I want to apologize to them and their families."

Even Jane Fonda apologized. Will you, John?

AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP

You have to read the catalogue of events in this brief piece. Then, ask yourself how anyone can take the position that all we have to do is bring our troops home from Iraq, sit back, re-set the snooze alarm, go back to sleep, and no one will ever bother us again.

In case you missed it, World War III began in November 1979... that alarm has been ringing for years.

U.S. Navy Captain Phil Ouimette, is the Executive Officer at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. Here is a copy of the speech he gave last month.

It is an accurate account of why we are in so much trouble today and why this action is so necessary.

AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP!

That's what we think we heard on the 11th of September 2001 (When more than 3,000 Americans were killed -AD) and maybe it was, but I think it should have been "Get Out of Bed!".   In fact, I  think the alarm clock has been buzzing since 1979 and we have continued to hit the snooze button and roll over for a few more minutes of peaceful sleep since then.

It was a cool fall day in November 1979 in a country going through a religious and political upheaval when a group of Iranian students attacked and seized the American Embassy in Tehran. This seizure was an outright attack on American soil; it was an attack that held the world's most powerful country hostage and paralyzed a Presidency. The attack on this sovereign U. S. Embassy set the stage for events to follow for the next 23 years.

America was still reeling from the aftermath of the Vietnam experience and had a serious threat from the Soviet Union when then, President Carter, had to do some thing. He chose to conduct a clandestine raid in the desert

The ill-fated mission ended in ruin, but stood as a symbol of America's inability to deal with terrorism.

America's military had been decimated and downsized/right sized since the end of the Vietnam War. A poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly organized military was called on to execute a complex mission that was doomed from the start.

Shortly after the Tehran experience, Americans began to be kidnapped and killed throughout the Middle East. America could do little to protect her citizens living and working abroad. The attacks against US soil continued.

In April of 1983 a large vehicle packed with high explosives was driven into the US Embassy compound in Beirut. When it explodes, it  kills 63 people. The alarm went off again and America hit the Snooze Button once more.

Then just six short months later a large truck heavily laden down with over 2500 pounds of TNT smashed through the main gate of the US Marine Corps headquarters in Beirut and 241 US servicemen are killed. America mourns her dead and hit the Snooze Button once more.

Two months later in December 1983, another truck loaded with explosives is driven into the US Embassy in Kuwait, and America continues her slumber.

The following year, in September 1984, another van was driven into the gates of the US Embassy in Beirut and America slept.

Soon the terrorism spreads to Europe. In April 1985 a bomb explodes in a restaurant frequented by US soldiers in Madrid.

Then in August a Volkswagen loaded with explosives is driven into the main gate of the US Air Force Base at Rhein-Main, 22 are killed and the snooze alarm is buzzing louder and louder as US interests are continually attacked.

Fifty-nine days later a cruise ship, the Achille Lauro is hijacked and we watched as an American in a wheelchair is singled out of the passenger list and executed.

The terrorists then shift their tactics to bombing civilian airliners when they bomb TWA Flight 840 in April of 1986 that killed 4 and the most tragic bombing, Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988, killing 259

Clinton treated these terrorist acts as crimes; in fact we are still trying to bring these people to trial. These are acts of war.

The wake up alarm is getting louder and louder. The terrorists decide to bring the fight to America. In January 1993, two CIA agents are shot and killed as they enter CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

The following month, February 1993, a group of terrorists are arrested after a rented van packed with explosives is driven into the underground parking garage of the   World Trade Center in New York City. Six people are killed and over 1000 are injured. Still this is a crime and not an act of war?

The Snooze alarm is depressed again. Then in November 1995 a car bomb explodes at a US military complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia killing seven service men
and women.

A few months later in June of 1996, another truck bomb explodes only 35 yards from the US military compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. It destroys the Khobar Towers, a US Air Force barracks, killing 19 and injuring over 500. The terrorists are getting braver and smarter as they see that America does not respond decisively.

They move to coordinate their attacks in a simultaneous attack on two US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. These attacks were planned with precision. They kill 224. America responds with cruise missile attacks and goes back to sleep.

The USS Cole was docked in the port of Aden, Yemen for refueling on 12 October 2000, when a small craft pulled along side the ship and exploded killing 17 US Navy Sailors. Attacking a US War Ship is an act of war, but we sent the FBI to investigate the crime and went back to sleep.

And of course you know the events of 11 September 2001. Most Americans think this was the first attack against US soil or in America. How wrong they are.

America has been under a constant attack since 1979 and we chose to hit the snooze alarm and roll over and go back to sleep.

In the news lately we have seen lots of finger pointing from every high officials in government over what they knew and what they didn't know.

But if you've read the papers and paid a little attention I think you can see exactly what they knew. You don't have to be in the FBI or CIA or on the National Security Council to see the pattern that has been developing since1979.

The President is right on when he says we are engaged in a war. I think we have been in a war for the past 23 years and it will continue until we as a people decide enough is enough.

America needs to "Get out of Bed" and act decisively now. America has been changed forever. We have to be ready to pay the price and make the sacrifice to ensure our way of life continues. We cannot afford to keep hitting the snooze button again and again and roll over and go back to sleep.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Yamamoto said "...it seems all we have done is awakened a sleeping giant." This is the message we need to disseminate to terrorists around the world.

Support Our Troops and support President Bush for having the courage, political or militarily, to address what so many who preceded him didn't have the backbone to do both Democrat and Republican. This is not a political thing to be hashed over in an election year this is an AMERICAN thing. This is about our Freedom and the Freedom of our children in years to come.

Please forward this to as many people as you can especially to the young people and all those who dozed off in history class and who seem so quick to protest such a necessary military action.

The next time you hear a politician use the wordsbillion casually, think about whether you want that politician spending your tax    money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into perspective in one of  its releases:

A billion seconds ago, it was 1959.

A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive.

A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate
Washington spends it.

The Democrats are complaining on how long the war is taking but consider this:

It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a   51

           day operation.

It took less time to find Saddam’s sons in Iraq than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took
Teddy Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sunk at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take
Iraq than it took to count the votes in  Florida!!!!!!

Man our military is GREAT !.

Excellent editorial. Am I correct in assuming that you have seen the movie?  I saw it on Ash Wednesday.  I can say that it was the perfect way to start the Lenten Season.  Pete, about 8 or 9 years (ago) I left the Catholic Church and joined The United Church of Christ (not to be confused with The Church of Christ).  I have learned more in those few years than during 12 years of Catholic school.  I don't blame the schools; I think that I wasn't mature enough to really learn it then.  Anyway, when I left the theater on Ash Wednesday my next stop was to drop off a couple of things to my pastor.  My greeting from her was "Well?".  My response was very simple, "draining".  I have always been very naive, so although the commercials and news did a good job of preparing the public for gore and reality, emotionally I was not prepared.  It was excellent and I think every one that believes that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior needs to see this movie, to see what this man did for us.  As far as anti-Semitism, that's just bull crap (spoken like a true ********, huh?).  Instead of blaming the Jews, I think we all know to just look in the mirror.

That's my little editorial, short and sweet.

Marie

PASSION OF THE CHRIST - review by Pete Phillips 2-25-2004

Not often does one become passionate about recommending anything much less a Hollywood creation. But, Mel Gibsons movie, ‘Passion of the Christ’ is the one. Do not deprive yourself of this one… Even if you gave up movies for lent – make this the exception.

Foreign movies with subtitles would usually be the key to up and leaving.. This one is totally in two (2) foreign languages with subtitles. You could enjoy this one even if the subtitles were absent. The film is so well acted and written by the best, Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. I don’t see it in the cards for those four guys getting an Oscar.

How good is it – people stayed and read the credits – no well known Hollywood types listed. Thank God! Speaking of God – it can be said He had a hand in this one.

My age group has its benefits when coming to critique a movie – old enough to have seen most of the greats and young enough to remember. Saw them all ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘Casablanca’, ‘Bells of Saint Mary’s’, ‘Titanic’ etc.. This tops the list – in my not so humble opinion.

Photography, sound, production, writing, authenticity, acting, directing, controversy – has it all.

Should children see it – YES, IF they know the story beforehand.

On the way home I happened to have on the radio a talk station and at that time of day there is a Liberal on the air. Surprise, surprise he said to a liberal caller that those criticisms and panning of the movie would not be said IF Mel Gibson were a Jew or a Muslim – Gibson happens to be a conservative Catholic who does not believe in Vatican II. Now, there are two of us. Gibson attends Mass where it is still said in Latin. Speaking of religion, seems we found something where the philosophical Jesuits are useful – they actually did consulting and I must say – did an excellent job – see, my Jesuit friends, when they do something right, I recognize them.

I did sit too far forward and because I will see it again – I’ll sit further back.

A pin could be heard to drop in the theater at the end – in fact there was not an audience sound in the entire packed house during the showing. Hey, it’s crowded when at the afternoon matinee with a seniors discount a seat was difficult to find.

For those who say it was violent then the Bible is violent. The scriptures use the word scourge, not whip, not beat, but, scourge, and that is what was shown in vivid detail. Jesus was not put here to go to a tea party for the twelve hours before his death. This movie is a realistic account of the twelve hours before his death on the cross – nothing more; nothing less. In Sixteen years of Catholic school, you can imagine how many times I heard of this horrible event in history – BUT- not until this film did the reality sink in as well as the reason for it….Having paid some attention to history classes re: the Roman empire, Hebrews and those times in general – this is most believable, and if you did have some doubts about this guy called Jesus, there will not be any doubts after seeing this movie.

Can’t say enough about this and those who know me, know I’m not a big movie goer so….Definitely a moving performance.

There is one thing to address – some of the criticism says it is anti semetic – NO WAY – were the Jews there? Were the Romans there? Were the writers there? Did this happen?

Please, pardon Mel Gibson for portraying it factually and vividly – we know the truth is a very rare occurrence in Hollywood.

SOME RESPONSES

Hi Pete

I enjoyed reading your editorial today, after having seen Passion of the Christ last night.  I have recommended to my daughter Kathy in Maryland and Linda in Jerusalem that they read your editorial (a much better report than the one I made to them).

I expect Israel to permit showing of the movie -- Linda and her husband will want to see it as will the rest of the Christian community there.  Some Jews will.  I don't know how the Muslims will feel.

Thanks for review on movie, very anxious to see it...........
Hey,
Our whole church is going this next Tuesday night to see it together.  They said last night that this is going to have a world revival, how could it not. I am looking forward to seeing this film, I saw on TV the human effect on everyone who saw it. Their was a Priest on there who said, that even he came out repenting of his personal sins and I said, WOW.

Max,
I thought you would be interested in this email from Ed Morrison and his brother Mike.  Ed worked at Triad in the early days and is ex-military.  His brother Mike has some interesting first hand experiences in the same area and at the time John Kerry served in Nam.

Subject: Fwd: John Kerry

A VERY interesting article by my brother, Mike, who won a bronze star in Vietnam.  I hope this one becomes public.

Bigger things.  I've long thought that John Kerry's war record was phoney. We talked about it when you were here.  It's mainly been instinct because, as you know, nobody who claims to have seen the action he does would so shamelessly flaunt it for political gain.  So I spent a couple of hours on the internet yesterday,  made a bunch of notes, and I'm sending them as an attachment.  In addition, look at the website http://25thaviation.org/johnkerry/id15htm. Somebody went to a lot of trouble to chronicle Kerry's checkered career.

I was in the Delta shortly after he left.  I know that area well.  I know the operations he was involved in well.  I know the tactics and the doctrine used.  I know the equipment.  Although I was attached to CTF-116 (PBRs) I spent a fair amount of  time with CTF-115 (swift boats), Kerry's command.

Here are my problems and suspicions:

(1) Kerry was in-country less than four months and collected, a Bronze Star,  a Silver Star and three purple hearts. I never heard of anybody with any outfit I worked with (including SEAL One, the Sea Wolves, Riverines and the River Patrol Force) collecting that much hardware so fast, and for such pedestrian actions. The Swifts did a commendable job.  But that duty wasn't the worst you could draw.  They operated only along the coast and in the major rivers (Bassac and Mekong).  The rough stuff in the hot areas was mainly handled by the smaller, faster PBRs.

(2)  Three Purple Hearts but no limp.  All injuries so minor that no time lost from duty.  Amazing luck.  Or he was putting himself in for medals every time he bumped his head on the wheel house hatch?  Combat on the boats was almost always at close range.  You didn't have minor wounds.  At least not often.  Not three times in a row.  Then he used the three purple hearts to request a trip home eight months before the end of his tour.  Fishy.

(3)  The details of the event for which he was given the Silver Star make no sense at all.  Supposedly, a B-40 was fired at the boat and missed.  Charlie jumps up with the launcher in his hand, the bow gunner knocks him down with the twin 50, Kerry beaches the boat, jumps off, shoots Charlie, and retreives the launcher.  If true, he did everything wrong.
    (a) Standard procedure when you took rocket fire was to put your stern to the action and go balls to the wall.  A B-40 has the ballistic integrity of a frisbie after about 25 yards, so you put 50 yards or so between you and the beach and begin raking it with your .50's.
   (b)  Did you ever see anybody get knocked down with a .50 caliber round and get up?  The guy was dead or dying.  The rocket launcher was empty.  There was no reason to go after him (except if you knew he was no danger to you just flopping around  in the dust during his last few seconds on earth, and you wanted some derring do in your after-action report). And we didn't shoot wounded people.  We had rules against that, too.
   (c)  Kerry got off the boat.  This was a major breach of standing procedures.  Nobody on a boat crew ever got off a boat in a hot area.  EVER!  The reason was simple.  If you had somebody on the beach your boat was defenseless.  It coudn't run and it couldn' t return fire. It was stupid and it put his crew in danger.  He should have been relieved and reprimanded.  I never heard of any boat crewman ever leaving a boat during or after a firefight.

Something is fishy.

Here we have a JFK wannabe (the guy Halsey wanted to court martial for carelessly losing his boat and getting a couple people killed by running across the bow of a Jap destroyer) who is hardly in Vietnam long enough to get good tan, collects medals faster than Audie Murphy in a job where lots of medals weren't common, gets sent home eight months early, requests separation from active duty a few months after that so he can run for Congress, finds out war heros don't sell well in Massachsetts in 1970 so reinvents himself as Jane Fonda, throws his ribbons in the dirt with the cameras running to jump start his political career, gets Stillborn Pell to invite him to address Congress and Bobby Kennedy's speechwriter to do the heavy lifting, winds up in the Senate himself a few years later, votes against every major defense bill, says the CIA is irrelevant after the Wall came down, votes against  the Gulf War, a big mistake since tha! t turned out well, decides not to make the same mistake twice so votes for invading Iraq, but oops, that didn't turn out so well so he now says he really didn't mean for Bush to go to war when he voted to allow him to go to war.

I'm real glad you or I never had this guy covering out flanks in Vietnam.  I sure don't want him as Commander in Chief.  I hope that somebody from CTF-115 shows up with some facts challenging Kerry's Vietnam record.  I know in my gut it's wildy inflated.  And fishy.

Keep smiling,

Mike

Subject: The Lesson of the Barbary Wars

Dennis Byrne is a Chicago-area writer and public affairs consultant

 January 5, 2004

For those who think it is always wiser to put together an  international panel of negotiators to try to talk foreign  enemies into being nice, I present to you our Arab war.

The one 200 years ago. The one in which diplomacy  failed miserably.  The one in which Europe refused to  help. The one we conducted alone. And won.  The Barbary Wars.

Talk about forgetting the lessons of history.  One of  the first ones we learned 200 years ago was that "diplomacy" and "multilateralism" sometimes must end and direct action must begin.  Back then, pirates from the North African states of Morocco, Algiers, Tunis  and Tripoli routinely plundered and seized our ships,  demanded ransoms for captive crews or sold our   Sailors into slavery.  European shipping routinely
 suffered the same fate.

Europe's answer was "let's negotiate," which meant sitting down with some pasha and asking him how much money he wanted to leave themalone.  Then   forking over millions. Thomas Jefferson thought that  approach ridiculous,  inviting never-ending blackmail.  As theAmerican minister to France, he  strongly urged  a multinational alliance to "reduce the piratical states  to peace."  Pick them off one at a time "through the medium of war," so the others get the message, and they'll give up their piracy too.

Some European powers were "favorably disposed,"  as Jefferson said, to a joint operation.  But guess who  had reservations? France. (No kidding, you can't make  up this stuff). France, because of its own interests, was  suspected of secretly supporting the Barbary powers.
So, the plan collapsed in favor of a policy of continued   negotiations (read: appeasement)-meaning supplicating  the blackmailers to tell us how much money they  wanted for the ransom of ships and sailors and for  annual tributes.

When Jefferson became president in 1801, he finally  could do something about it himself.  He simply  refused Tripoli's demand for a tribute.  That provoked  Tripoli to declare war on us, as if this young, upstart pup of a nation had any right to stand up for its principles.  Jefferson's response was a no-nonsense piece of clarity.

He sent a squadron of ships to blockade and bombard  Tripoli.  The results of these efforts were somewhat mixed.  But on Feb. 16 of this year, we  will celebrate the  bicentennial of Lt. Stephen Decatur leading 74 volunteers   into Tripoli harbor to burn the previously captured American
frigate, The Philadelphia, so it could not be used for piracy.

It was considered one of the most heroic actions in U.S.  naval history.   The next year, Marines bravely stormed a  harbor fortress, an act now commemorated in the "Marine  Corps Hymn" with the words "... to the  shores of Tripoli."  Eventually, Morocco, seeing what was in store for it,
dropped out of the fight.  And the threat of "regime change"  in Tripoli led to a treaty of somewhat dubious benefits for  the United States.

Demonstrating the need for perseverance and patience,  a series of Victories in 1815 by Commodores William  Bainbridge and Decatur finally led to a Treaty ending both  piracy against us and tribute payments by us.

We even Extracted monetary compensation for property they seized from us.

Meanwhile, Europeans, continuing their multilateral,  diplomatic approach kept paying and paying and paying.

Lessons? No, it doesn't prove that diplomacy and  international cooperation never work.  But it demonstrates  a principle: The United States, when confronted with weak  resolve from the international community against  enemies,  sometimes needs to stand alone for what is right.  And it  sometimes works.

By coincidence, Tripoli today is the capital of Libya, whose  leader Moammar Gadhafi, noticing the pounding that the  United States gave to tyrants in Afghanistan and Iraq,  abandoned his own weapons of mass destruction  program.

Perhaps Gadhafi, unlike some of our own blindly anti-war  academics,  commentators and politicians, has read history,  especially as it happened in Libya.

One more footnote:  France finally settled the hash of the  Barbary Coast states in 1830 when it simply went in and took  over the place.  The  official provocation, according to France,  was some sort of an insult to the French consul in Algiers.  France, demonstrating its superior humanitarian instincts,  remained there as a colonial power for a century.  Unlike the   United States, which, wanting only to protect its citizens and  its ships, got out when it won.

Dear Pete,

Here is what I tried to enter on your website referring to the editorial page:

I served in our Navy (proudly) from 1946 to 1968 and I still remember classes in boot camp on Naval History. Your editorial covering the Barbary Coast pirates and the actions we took really impressed me.  The Naval actions that I studied as a "boot" have remained with me and, over the years, I have reflected on our diplomacy of that time as compared to "modern" international relations.  We are missing something, aren't we! I am still impressed by the National pride exhibited back in Jefferson's days.  We were tested and we stood up to the challenge heroically and steadfastly.

During my Naval service, I had the honor of serving aboard a destroyer, the USS DECATUR, including a six-month tour of duty in the Mediterranean.  Thank you for that editorial.

Best regards,

Gene Smith
